This course introduces the process of metalcasting. It provides a broad picture of what happens in a casting production facility, while illustrating the technology, variables and complexity involved in producing a casting. It covers casting design, alloy selection, process selection, design of the gating system, pouring and shakeout methods, cleaning and finishing methods, quality assurance, and key safety and environmental regulations.

Course Instructors:

Dr. Sudesh Kannan, Consultant

Dr. Sudesh Kannan helps foundries reduce their casting scrap and rework rates to improve their profitability. With over 20 years of global foundry support, Kannan has helped businesses generate new products and services and tackled commercialization challenges of new technologies. He has authored over 25 technical papers, conference publications, and has been printed in Modern Casting and AFS Transactions. His background includes service with Selee, Praxair, St. Gobain and the University of Maryland. Kannan has a Ph.D. in materials science from UVA.


Patrick Kluesner, Sr. Product Engineer, Grede Castings

Patrick Kluesner, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology Management from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, recently took a position with Grede Castings. Patrick served as a Training Engineer at MAGMA where he taught basic and advanced simulation techniques, with an emphasis on HPDC and sand casting. When not teaching, he was also responsible for creating content for seminars, webinars, and online tutorials for defect analysis and resolution.


Shannon Wetzel, American Foundry Society

Shannon Wetzel is managing editor of AFS’s Modern Casting and Casting Source magazines. Over the course of 18 years covering the industry for AFS, she has visited more than a hundred foundries, giving her a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities for North American metalcasters. The award-winning Modern Casting is the flagship magazine for AFS, published monthly, while Casting Source is a bi-monthly magazine providing designing and sourcing content for customers who buy and specify castings.
