Steel Melting 201 will cover the operations of steel melting furnaces including electric arc and induction; the process steps of charging and startup, melt down, chemistry slag control, alloying, tapping, and process documentation; post melt processing methods AOD and VOD; melt quality control of undesirable elements with sampling and chemistry measurements; ladle selection and considerations; maintenance and safety procedures.

Michael Porfilio is director of quality, foundry engineering and technical departments at Stainless Foundry & Engineering, Inc. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). His specialties include metallurgical sciences, quality management and assurance, foundry operations, and third-party specification interpretation. Porfilio is responsible for maintaining the ISO 9001:2015, 2014/68/EU Pressure Equipment Directive, ISO 17025, Nuclear, NAVSEA and other compliance programs in the foundry and machine shop.
