The 2019 Transactions of the American Foundry Society are the papers which are reviewed by metalcasting industry peers after they are submitted for presentation at the annual AFS Metalcasting Congress. All papers published in AFS Transactions have been approved after a rigorous peer review. This review process is designed to ensure that only original papers of the highest quality are accepted for publication. The reviewers are AFS national committee members—respected and accomplished metalcasting specialists—that are pre-qualified according to metalcasting specialty and expertise. Each paper is allocated to three qualified reviewers who evaluate the quality and technical merit of each paper using standardized review criteria that evaluates data, experimentation methods, conclusions, and references. The AFS Technical Department then selects those papers that meet a higher level of science and research criteria, highly cited and referenced.

In this volume, papers on the following topics were presented at the 123rd Metalcasting Congress, held in conjunction with CastExpo in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2019:

  • • Additive Manufacturing
  • • Aluminum
  • • Cast Iron
  • • Environmental, Health & Safety
  • • Engineering
  • • Molding Methods & Materials
  • • Steel
  • Additional papers not presented are also included.

The AFS Transactions has been published since 1896. The wealth of information that is contained from the collected papers is a testament to the dedication of individuals who research topics that help to improve and bring forward the many aspects of the industry, whether it’s in safety, or in casting iron, steel, aluminum or copper, or in improving methods of melting and pouring, or in improving equipment. The Transactions is the one publication that keeps up with what is new in metalcasting.
