The sixth edition of the PPE Guide for Metalcasting Operations describes and updates the special considerations for the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and special clothing for work situations that present a risk of exposure to metalcasting hazards.
The chapter on Reference Documents now include links, and a new chapter on Flame Resistant Clothing updates the previous edition’s Appendix 2 on the same topic. The Sample Hazard Assessment Form has also been updated.
Although not intended to take the place of specific requirements listed in other standards (nor does it claim to be the absolute answer to PPE selection), it is recommended to be used as a tool in completing hazard assessment (using the Hazard Assessment form and clothing recommendations in the Chapters), identify potential hazards of the job under evaluation, and locate the section for the operation and protection item or body part.
Note: The original version of this guide (Guide for the Selection & Use of Personal Protective Equipment & Special Clothing for Foundry Operations) was created and developed by the American Foundry Society (AFS) Safety & Health Committee (10-Q) September 1998 and revised as an AFS/OSHA Alliance (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) product in September 2005. This 2020 version supersedes all prior versions of the PPE Guide.
